I’ve spoken about this briefly earlier; Bono is an amazing singer and there are several thousands of singers out there. Do you ever wonder though what about him makes him stand out amongst the rest of the crowd?  What about him has brought him international fame and adoration from millions of fans, some of whom waited patiently for well over two years following his back injury just to see him and the rest of the U2 band perform?

It’s because he has a message that he stands by! He is politically and socially active and uses his celebrity status to help bring meaningful change to millions of people throughout the world.  When you have a message that propels you day in and day out, it gives you permission to excel and exceed.

Do you have a message that you live by in your personal life?

A 90th birthday celebration.

Birthday’s are fun occasions but a 90th is extra special.

If you can picture a busy bee going from one flower to the next, then you can picture Yolanda mingling with guests during her birthday celebration! This made for a fantastic evening at the SF War Memorial and Performing Arts Center . Her daughter, Marcia, has an infectious laugh and her grandchildren are beautiful. Above all they are wonderful, warm and loving people. I was so honored to have documented this event for the family.

Isn’t this what life is all about? To be blessed with a loving family, bask in their company and enjoy every moment of it?

p.s. Yolanda has a lot of energy and some cool dance moves. I’m thinking, I am going to need to call her for dance lessons.

How beautiful not only to host such a wonderful celebration but to have you document it so that they can look and remember in the now but also for future generations...thank you for sharing and may we all look forward to such a warm and vibrant 90th birthday celebration...

Women who get "up there" in age are really amazing, aren't they? I have an aunt who turned 103 in July. We used to joke about people being 103 when I was a kid, and it was because we never figured we'd see anyone that old. Little did we know!

    Go Yolanda!

Bono and branding

Bono and branding

How can I not talk about Bono and branding! When I was at the concert, I got to see the brand in action. Let’s face it, Bono is a singer and there are thousands of singers on this planet. How does he differentiate himself? Well, it has a lot to do with his message (more on that later) but also his style too. Let’s be honest, I’m sure he doesn’t wear those  trademark glasses on the account of his poor eyesight. They might have a practical purpose, to protect his eyes from the harsh lights during concerts, but he has embraced it as his look!

As a business, you need to brand yourself! It does not primarily have to do with the way you dress, but the overall message you send out is in sync with you as a person. There is no more powerful brand than you, yourself! I am learning this. I had a couple of client pictures on the panoramic profile on my facebook business page, but with the encouragement of other successful solopreneurs, I realized that it is about branding yourself!

Hiding behind a logo does not seem to be much of a choice for U2. Each album has an identity, but if you think about it, there is no official U2 logo. This is a perfect example of recognition that you can have if you go logoless!!!

A brand also does evolve with time. Bono was a lead singer of a band that started off playing in bars. I’m sure his style has evolved since those days, but what remains the same are his values as a person and his message. Are you aware that you will evolve as a brand too?

We really have no choice but to evolve. Not if we want to succeed.

  • Gail Nott Wednesday, August 10, 2011 5:19 am

So funny... I used Bono as an example in one of my webinars about purpose & branding in social media! I'm a big believer in NOT hiding behind a logo, especially when you are a solopreneur.

As I mentioned in the earlier post, we got to the U2 concert hours ahead of time. As we crossed the bridge from the BART to enter the Collisuem, I must have seen at least a hundred trucks parked outside. Once I got in I saw the massive structure the concert was going to be held in and thought of the planning that must have gone into it. A quick calculation in my mind and the voice inside me muttered “Roughly 5 years for the structure”. Can you imagine when the world tour plans must have been laid out?

Here’s the reality. Success takes planning! I stood there witnessing the success…..a couple of years of planning, hundreds on hours spent on a project, not to mention the various specialists from engineers to sound specialists, right down to the very person who disassemebles and reassembles it again from one concert to the next! There I was soaking it all in and having a great time, oblivious to the planning.

As an entrepreneur the idea of freedom is very attractive and suddenly ‘planning’ seems to tame us down. The reality is once you learn to tame yourself, it isONLY then that success knocks on our door! I was a very spontaneous person and to a certain extent still am, but the reality of being a successful business owner was that I learned and am still constantly learning to plan and implement.

It is all thanks to my husband’s planning that we got there ahead of time and scored a coveted a spot. The SF Chronicle Pop Music Critic, Aidin Vaziri mentioned in his article “ “The traffic which turned a typically easy commute to the ballpark into a panic-laced three-hour ordeal dotted with beaming red lights and a robust chorus of car horns.” Some people did not even make it to the concert until the very end beacuse of the traffic! They had great intentions as they managed to score tickets to the concert but didn’t plan to be there early!

If I was to show you a picture from before the start of the concert, my body language was not very positive, my arms were crossed and my expression was grim because of standing under the sun. But here you see me in the audience, clearly enjoying the the fact that I had a great spot, next to the ramp where Bono was performing! This what happens when you plan and implement… the sea of people behind me are a proof!

Planning does pay off… I’m sure you’ve experienced the same!

You're so right. Planning is key - to putting on a good event, building a business or even making a meal.
    I just hate that! LOL.

Planning is crucial for the success of any desired outcome. What an experience that must have been for you, and the rewards to planning ahead and staying on course. Thanks for sharing.

  • Diana Placiakiene Tuesday, August 9, 2011 7:28 am

So so true! Applies to the business as well as our personal life. For the creative types, planning looks pretty boring, but....after a while it hits you hard- you can't be successful without good planning. Period.

U2 concert experience

Going to a U2 concert was on my husband’s bucket list! So this year, we checked it off…. and here’s the double whammy… I returned from the concert extremely inspired!. It might also have been something to do with the fact that Bono was performing at an arms length from where I was. To say that the show was a feast for my visual and auditory senses is an understatement.

I stood there mesmerized thinking that Bono is not just a singer or performer, he is a revolution. He has a core message that he believes in and has gained a worldwide followiing as a direct result. Our tickets were for general field admission which meant that it guaranteed you admission into the venue but not a spcific spot.  Several thousand fans, including my husband and I, waited for hours outside the stadium just to score a “decent” spot…the stadium holds a TON of people (68,0000 to be exact) and sure enough was packed to the capacity by the time Bono and the crew walked onto the stage.

I enjoyed the show as a fan but as the evening kept unfolding before my eyes and ears,  the artist and entrepreneur in me surfaced. I watched as Bono engaged with his fans and the audience, he kept it interesting and yet true to himself and his style. He was backed by an excellent team and he acknowledged them throughout the show.  Clearly, he wasn’t hungry for the spot light and didn’t  want to hog the limelight all to himself!

For the next couple of days, I will be talking about the different things that I realized in this one evening!
As an artist who is also an entrepreneur or for that matter any kind of entrepreneur, how do you engage with your community, how do you keep your followers engaged?

These shots are fantastic. I can feel the electricity of the evening without having to endure the drawbacks of being at a live concert. I hope the music and the "show" was all you hoped it would be. You certainly captured the event for me!

  • Allison Rapp Tuesday, August 9, 2011 1:05 am

It sounds like you were not terribly enthusiastic at the start of this venture... that would have been me, too. So nice to know that the outcome could be way beyond what I would have hoping for! Thanks for a new perspective!

Great pictures! It's fabulous to attend events and feel so much energy and inspiration afterwards! Your excitement is contagious and I look forward to reading more about what you learned at the concert. I hope that I engage my community with an open and honest view of my caregiving experience. I think you also have to be passionate about something in order to engage your audience. That comes through in this post!

I love U2 and I can totally relate to how going to a concert of this caliber can be very inspiring. I went to the Lady Gaga's concert in March and was moved big time. She's very different, of course, and,up until recently I wasn't paying attention to her. But I was curious to see her live, to see her interacting with the public. She's only 25 and not everyone likes her because of her pushing many limits, but she has a very clear message, though. She also has a very strong presence and power of inspiring her fans.
Thanks for sharing, Gurpreet! Love your pics!

  • Kerry Hargraves Monday, August 8, 2011 4:30 pm

How wonderful - to check one off the list and have it not only meet but exceed expectations. Wonderful pictures, deep insights and a rocking concert. Looking forward to learning more about your realizations.

What an inspiring Blog, Gerpreet! You have really gotten me thinking about your question - about how do I engage my community. I do so by inspiring my community, my clients, to know that their Angels really are with them - and that they are always there to help them. The key is to remember to give our Angels permission help us.

  • Kim Schuld Monday, August 8, 2011 3:03 pm

Thank you for your beautiful insight. As a Left-Brained thinker, it always helps me to get insights to the processing of artists. Makes me feel that there is hope yet for my creative side and my rational side to coordinate and collaborate!

  • Shivie Cook Monday, August 8, 2011 4:51 am

What a beautiful post. I feel like i was there-I saw U2 in the UK many years ago, look forward to hearing more.

We keep our community engaged by giving them permission to spark off our passionate fire...thank you giving me a spark tonight, it will light my fore for the days to come and i will be back for more
